filter's are usually found on a mixer with assignable band parameters

Just to expand on this, normally High or Low, what it does is cuts the frequencies above (low-pass) or below (high-pass).. You'll hear it a lot in post-production songs as well as mixing, it's one of the easiest things to do to ensure no frenquency clashing, i.e similar basslines, rather than EQ'ing you can lowpass one and high pass the other.
