More importantly, the government receives the money from the ppca licence and its not like they know which artists to play. At the end of the day, we promote artists and to a lesser extent remixers so i guess it evens out

Flow of the night: Dj Competition: Advice needed

Creepy yes, but it's more or less the same way Facebook advertising functions. I just had to make the most of the resources I could access. Lurk6rs gonna Lurk6 -
Played another 16th that stemmed from the gig I did last week. Relatively easy, played mostly commercial remixes and the same shitty rnb/hip hop crap from last week (saved the history, half the guests went to both). They were happy, I made good money. And I finally managed to get a good photo of my setup. I would like to eventually get a second laser so their in pairs, but it has been discontinued and hard to find.

Let's just say that he would never contribute to the topic at hand, instead he kept saying the same shit over and OVER again such as: - if you don't have a ppca or apra licence your a criminal - if you don't have insurance then asking for it also from what I could do see, dude doesn't even mix. /change topic

Dance centered. Its slow but the following is fairly loyal. I already do mobile gigs so $$$ aside I don't really want to make a general party night.

Saturday night: Didn't make it past the semi finals. Got a message from the promoter the next day saying it was really close and that I did a good job and they'll keep me in mind when they have some openings. Also they loved my poster, I was the first to bother making one, so I guess it helps to stand out. Sunday night: Coco Jambo round 2. New venue, Upstairs at the Bay Hotel Mornington. Reasonably sized, big enough that you can have people dancing and not hitting each other, but not too big that it seems empty. Nice wooden floor. Brought the s4 and my own lights, but had to use their sound system; Four 10" speakers hung directly above the dance floor facing down, they were also compressed fairly aggressively. The band down stairs was fairly low and you could feel their bass in the floor. I talked to the owner and he's letting me bring my subwoofer next time. We had 23 people show up, for our first night at this new place I'm very happy, 3 of them saw our facebook adds and decided to come down and learn how to dance. 2 were experienced salsa dancers who heard the music when they walked past the stairs and decided to join. We covered out costs, made $11 profit (which is about $1489 increase in income compared to the last one...). Most of our patrons were from the dance studio I teach at, the general feedback was they liked the relaxed environment, being able to grab some champagne and tapas and dance when they feel, instead of being forced all the time. The night ran for 3 and a half hours. It was interesting, we planned to salsa and cha cha at the start for one hour, but that backfired as everybody ordered food which arrived halfway through the class. So we took a break, everybody ate, then we got back into it. Made them swap partners a bit, to get them to know each other then I told them to go back to their original partner and put on some music. They danced for about 15 minutes then got over salsa. From this point onward we more or less followed this pattern. Teach a new dance for 15 (salsa, cha cha, bachata, merengue), then we all danced together while I counted it out, swapped partners, then I'd let them do their own thing while I mixed for about 15 minutes. Then I would go back to just playing chill music. As the night when on I would play less chill music and more dancing music as people started to get more comfortable. An interesting trend that seems to be developing, both here and at Alumbra, we always get the band from next door coming over to check it out in the breaks. Guess we're doing something right. Photos should be up around tuesday

Flow of the night: Dj Competition: Advice needed

Just got a message from the promoter after I sent a courtesy thank you txt. They were really happy with my mix and it was extremely close. Also they were very impressed with the posters and general effort/creativity getting people on my list (aka stalking last weeks photos and msging everybody that was tagged at the club). I guess at the end of the day you got to be good at what you do and respect everybody that works at the venue. -

Flow of the night: Dj Competition: Advice needed

When you say huge, do you think I should build it up for 5 mine over 2 songs. Or go hard straight head. I know im overthinking this. But on one had they may lose energy if i build up slow. On the other hand, release without building tension doesn't mean much -
Flow of the night: Dj Competition: Advice needed

I was planning on mixing into this, letting it play for a min. Then as it goes quiet at the 1min mark, play vocal drop ("You are now in the mix with Dj VLAD [echo] VLAd VLad Vlad vlad [echo]) so the echo fades right as the vocals starts fading in. I'm going in on the premise the guy is dick and might end on something that is difficult to mix, eg dubstep, in which case I could just echo it out and build up. The other thing is I want to make it very clear that his set has finished and mine has begun. -
Hey guys, I need some advice. Somehow, nfi how, I'm going to be playing second in tonights dj competition. Theres just me and one other guy. We each have 30 min sets. Obviously I don't know what hes going to play, but I know hes into tech and bangers. So my question is. Without know how hard hes going to finish and/or if the crowd is digging it. Should I play to start by "resetting" the crowd with a track that a slow but massive build up? Maybe also have a vocal drop as well?

All good if you have a 19" rack. I don't, so not a good trade off.

You may want to buy a small pa mixer and run your microphone separately from the s4. I always find I'm getting a bit of lag when running a mic through it.

Depends on theme, the client and weather or not the costume is going to get in the way. Eg. iron man mask, altough cool, you can't listen to your headphones and its hard to see. Same goes for claws or baggy jackets that may hit the faders accidentally. Also, make absolutely sure its okay with the client/s. I went to a white party once in a white t and trackies and even tough the bitch said it was okay on the phone, she gave me a shit review cause I played the music the guests wanted to hear not her (her being the organiser of a footy fund raiser)
