  1. ah... So you are in the bar room to a dance club? That makes it trickier to be sure if people are hanging for your tunes or just drinking at the bar then going back to main room. My approach would be: If it is obvious that people are digging your set and if it happens on a weekly basis over a few weeks then it may be worth just asking the bartender: "so how is business while I'm DJing?" If he's a fair bloke he'll be honest and if he's clearly happy thats when you ask. Another approach is: you say 6 until whenever: if you find you are staying later and later each week... then ask. do not judge on one week though, there are fluctuations each month due to when people get paid, bank hols, etc etc etc. TBH using this gig as a way of getting used to the monthly and yearly changes in normal public footfall may be worth doing at your age anyway. Lots of djs wonder why a specific night was shite and dont realise it was just because it was the last weekend before pay cheques, everyone's kids were having school plays or some other shit that keeps people away from bars and clubs. I'm a slow moving gentleman though, anyone else got another approach? p.s. are you taking the kit or do they supply?
  2. Same in U.K. its known as PAT (portable appliance testing). Like andy muso said: it's not just cables - it's the units and the cables for anything that plugs in. So laptop and PSU, CDJ and fig 8, Mixer and IEC, all power extensions etc. I get organised and get everything done once a year. Try and get mates organised too so all loads of kit is in one place and then I get a PAT engineer to come out... that way I get a discount for quantity of units and dont have to think about it again.
  3. really there is no point me posting just to bump a thread already so full of knowledge. but yer.
  4. i am the resurrection and i am the life... big propz to little brother
  5. considering age and experience i would say that sounds reasonable if you are turning up, playing a bit and getting home early. things to consider: 1) if your gig is on fri or sat night you expect a better rate as these are the busiest nights 2) if your gig goes past midnight you expect more money 3) if you are supplying the eqpt you should get more money 4) keep your eye on how busy the bar is. If it appears that more customers are buying grog each week and staying longer because of your music then you ask for more money.
  6. ^ prob a bit late but just backing up what andy the muso said. He put all the info right there.
  7. this is a good point, if you are recording audio direct from decks and from camera you may get a phased signal which could result in that sound you are hearing. Phasing occurs when a speaker tries to reproduce exactly the same frequency twice. Just turn down the audio from the camera?
  8. i've always been scared of these coz the guy who does my daughters school does loads of activities, mic work, dance comp, etc etc. the tunes he plays are the last thing on his mind and pre-arranged. then again if source says avoiding all that worked too then maybe I should re-think. EZ gigs are ez... and at a time of day where you can go str8 to another function i guess.
  9. I will remember Pez now love. Drunk foolish was drunk but happy to help keep little sis smiling
  10. test every button works, use a manual if poss to be sure. test the platter works - set the platter to vinyl mode and test it responds instantly wherever you place your hand on it i.e. at every point of the 360 degrees of it's circle. test the nudge (edge of the platter ) is also responsive wherever you choose to nudge from. Leave it playing for an hour or so if poss, then try repeat the above. If no probs then you have no probs.
  11. I don't have many but you may as well PM me your list mate. If the postage plus a little for my time is cheaper than you can find it there you can have any of that i've got.
  12. spot on tubby. Basic solid reliable mixer. for the mid 90's. Cant guarantee they are still made to the same build quality.
  13. 10 min is purely a showcase of skill and is nothing more than a tease to people listening, So tease them: use tunes they will recognise, but at any point they expect that tune to break ot a chorus, hook or verse you change to a different tune instead. Until you drop the last one which should be the most popular and faded out after they recognise the break they love. so at the gig: be prepped with 1st two tunes beatmatched, take a piece of paper or write the pitch fader setting on your cd covers if necessary. Have the whole set planned with tempo/pitch settings noted so you dont even have to put headphones on except to look cool Start 1st tune, after 8 or so beats start track 2, it should be cued so it will break as tune 1 would, but you cut between them at the break. Then instantly track 3, etc etc, with a bit of to and fro back to later parts of the tunes you only heard a little bit off. eg: tune 1 intro, tune 2 hook, tune 3 verse 1, tune1 chorus, tune 3 verse 2, tune 2 main break and hook, fade out. but obv you dont follow this, you structure it round the songs you have and use as many songs as you need. Aim to never have just one track playing for more than 8 beats or so and that will keep listeners on their toes for ten minutes. If you can scratch do, if you cant do some stutters on cue buttons. Basically you build your own climax. and i think someone already mentioned practise? Finally: if it aint working it is better to play one song then fade to another and admit that's the level you are at, than cause a crime to a music by mixing badly in front of people.
  14. just a tip if you are moving from vinyl to cdj control: There is a button on the cdjs called "master tempo" which is quite a confusing name. It acts the same as keylock on serato so you may already be familiar with it but just in case: When you have it set "on" it stops any chance of the tone/pitch of your tune being affected however much you nudge the platter. It still allows you to alter tempo. This means that if you need to make a VERY big nudge you can get away with it. Even though on vinyl you wouldn't dare because you know everyone would hear the slur of the tone as you did it. It's possibly the main reason transferring skills from vinyl to cdj is easy. Plus of course you cant make the needle skip on a CDJ hope that makes sense.
  15. ^ haha, you're folks prob heard it on the indian hippy trail then... same heritage as hindu sri lanka after all then!
  16. He clearly doesnt know what serato is but I assume he has it in-house, needs a mobile DJ on hand for regular bookings, and appears to have the equipment needed. It's not a great rate of pay but to get a foot in the door and to get yourself heard I would snap that up if I had a visa already sent him a mail anwyway. do things like that come up often?
  17. aye. baby steps for now mate
  18. I have a friend from sri lanka called Vajram, always figured you were from same heritage, never guessed you'd put that one together lol.
  19. ^interesting. So each location has someone who can deliver tuition, adjf advertises the service, wherever a customer comes from there there is a certified adjf tutor who can teach them. sounds do-able in the long term. Fairplay Styga.
