Idea for a business, partners and/or investors needed.
imadje replied to imadje's topic in DJ Headquarters
great stuff guys, PM'd you both. I go camping for a week from this monday so dont expect much contact but: The way I see it is this: you can all DJ and/or produce, you all have good kit. Please consider the following and see how involved you would really want to be: Can you teach? it takes a lot of patience, sometimes with people you really wouldn't piss on if they were on fire. and sometimes needs an ability to read peoples minds. Can you run a business? We would most likely need to source premises, adhere to all the laws regarding insurance, tax, safety, copyright and who knows what else. We would also need to advertise/market services so would need a website, flyers etc etc. Plus of course we need to be sure we earn enough to pay everyone involved, so the more people involved the more we need to earn... streamlined is a good way to start. I have done all this before but in UK so assuming there are differences in employment and tax law I would need to start from square 1 in OZ. to be honest: ideally for me someone else runs the business and employs me as tutor for students and as trainer for new staff. if this wont work I will run the business but this would mean I have less time for the actual teaching which is what I'm very good at. Basically though I cant even get there to sort stuff unless I get a Visa for my family, which i believe means a business has to be already set up and inviting me over. As already mentioned I think email is a better way to comm from now on, maybe we can arrange a skype conference or something when I'm back from camping hol to see what ideas everyone has? unless we can arrange a private group on here or something? Wazza, Cupe, Source, Skank, Gandy, Foolish, sounds like a good group to act as the Board of Directors to me... so lots to think about, I'll leave it with you all, see what you think... -
^yep, subscribe to a forum results in an email for any new posts or new threads in that forum. so there is no point subscribing to new threads in a forum you have already subsrcribed to.

there is only one pen, it writes on clouds

stumped mate, sorry. it only happens when recording, it happens whichever recording software you use. you did check you're souncard settings are set to line level not mic didnt you? maybe you should try a different soundcard just to rule that out.

Mitch and Chris are right. The only way round it is to keep your ear on it throughout and nudge accordingly. Or get a DVS and press SYNC. Personally I think a DJ in control of a small nudge every few bars adds real groove and individuality to a mix. There are so many ways you can line up beats, some laid back, some pushing forward. Same way a drummer can chill or push on the pulse of a song.

Cheers Mitch. Cupe: I guess you read the right 4% for you. Feasible sounds great mate. -
If I subscribe to a forum do I get mailed for new threads and new posts in threads in that forum? Or do I need to subscribe to all the individual threads I want to know about? cheers

^spot on Cupe. It's sad but true: new clubs don't buy technics and old clubs have often packed them away to make space for more CDJ. If you don't have gigs yet it's a big outlay for a CDJ rig but. Can you practise on anyone elses CDJs and see how how hard it will be to transfer your skills? You may feel confident enough to go for gigs while saving up for your own pair. You'll still have to check you can bring in your serato kit though, management and sound tech will want to know you are capable of putting stuff back the way you found it for the next DJ.

Keeping people away and yourself safe! (I need help)

yer, i wouldnt try and put obstacles in the way, they'll just gain elevation on them. Better to rule the room, have some friends/allies to keep fuckwits under control and set the mood with the music you play. -

wazza, i love you Check your PM's and lets see where this road takes us. Gandy, Cupe, I hear you and it's all good too. Wheels can start turning now perhaps, you know good lads are never forgotten... p.s. whats an ABN? -
So I posted the bones of this idea in the "what does adjf need" thread but just so I can be sure none of you miss it I am reposting. I want to move my family to Australia. I want to continue doing the same work there that i do here. All I need is visas stating I have work there. Once I get there I can do the rest. I am looking for partners or investors who will help me. If all you want to do is set up the paperwork so the business is registered and then employ me (at no cost) so I get the visa then that is good, you'll have a permanent position on the board. If you want to come in on a 50/50 split and be fully involved in setting up the business that is great. I am 100% flexible how things are set up. I am also 100% flexible where this would be done but have done some research into competition and market so have some ideas. I just need to be there to start the ball rolling and to get there I need the visa. its a bit of a catch 22. The business: I teach DJ skills to private customers. I also teach to kids with behavioural difficulties, young offenders, kids on probation, kids with special needs or kids from rural communities... basically anyone that isnt doing great in normal education for whatever reason. The kind of kids that the government funds to keep busy. The business can be set up as a charity or can be entirely private. The business would require premises, ideally 2 or 3 teaching spaces of various sizes, one of which can be used for parties and showcases of talent. The business would require DJ kit. I would fund if necessary but sharing with an investor makes things easier/quicker. The business would require advertising to private customers. My experience, training and references would bring in the govt funded work. The business would work best if at least one other tutor was available to do music production lessons, having a rapper/MC who can deliver is also good, as is having a graf artist and some street/break-dance tutors. That way we cover all the elements of "urban art" I would train and mentor any teaching staff we needed to employ as to how best to deal with the different groups of kids. In my experience it is best to employ these kind of staff as sub-contractors anyway so employee wages are not a big drain. The business could also offer rent of the rooms to other tutors on other instruments as extra income. To fund my family while this business was getting moving I would do Mobile DJ gigs on the weekend and my wife would continue her online translation work. We would also rent our property in the U.K. so would have income from that. Obviously I'm not gonna give out all the details of my business idea. ANYONE INTERESTED IN SRS POST?

^ yep, one tip: burn two copies of everything: that way if you are playing a track from a disc and want another track from that disc you have a second copy so can do so. I actually put whole genres into itunes playlists, sort by the bpm column, burn across multiple cds making a note of which tracks ended up on which cd, then print entire tracklist using itunes own custom print (so i can have bpm and my own comments printed out too) then I cut up the print out to match to each disc.

^my post was srs. i guess none of you would want to risk moving from your riveting jobs tho? edit: in fact i wonder if anyone would like to invest in a niche in the market which supplies a community service and earns a private profit while giving a few of us "partners" a really interesting environment in which to work, play and throw parties? Wouldnt have to be bris but looks like the best option considering number of clubs/interest in DJing/existing services compared to syd and melb. All I would really want is someone to register the business so we can get visas stating I would be employed, I'd come over, get the kids in school, find a roof over our heads, while also getting str8 on with finding premises for the dj school, kitting it out, promoting the service and then running the business. I'd do all the work really My experience and references plus relevant training would have the government and education services eating from the palm of my hand. Private customers would flock in and all be automatically membered to ADJF, the whole school could be branded as ADJF. Then start a club event/talent showcase also branded with ADJF. I'm prob going to do something along these lines anyway and will maintain ties to adjf out of respect, if you guys got fully on board it would just be quicker for me and more fun to have you all to bounce off.

Calling the cops has to be last resort however you think about it: For you to hear the phone you either turn music off which means everyone kicks off, or hears what you are doing and riots. Or you have to walk away to make the call and your stuff is trashed anyway. Prevention is def better than cure on this one. Set boundaries and make allies before you start. If you still have to cut music and tell some fuckwits to chill then your allies should help stir the crowd in your favour. It's also part of the game though mate. Part of reading the dancefloor. If things are getting out of hand maybe play a few slower songs for couples... If your lucky the fuckwits will go get a drink or have a smoke. -
Serato Scratch = timecode or midi control but requires serato hardware in the same way traktor needs a soundcard. Some Serato hardware takes the form of a mixer which you just plug decks into. Serato Itch = only works with specific hardware controllers such as NS6, VCI-300 DDJs1. They are two different products made by same brand. Sol: itch will not work with CDJs as controllers. Check wazzas serato knowledge above.

all the following were made while waiting through the worlds worst best man speech - You should be sure the kit you take works before leaving home. If you are taking a radio mic that uses a battery be sure you have swapped the battery for a new one and checked it works at home before setting off. Radio mics have notoriously short wires connecting the battery and these can easily break. If you have been given a playlist by the groom be sure and check that he has checked what the bride likes. Obviously this should be done with some diplomatic awareness but it is fair to say that some men do not listen to their wives. I have done weddings where the groom has insisted “no requests” and told me to only play the music he has chosen but then the bride wants some cheese for her mates. It's their fault they didnt discuss this before the event but you are the one on the spot on the night. Take some grub, they will stuff their faces all day in front of you and you may get a plateful. Dont count on it though. The worst thing that can happen is not you getting punched or your kit getting wrecked. Both these can be fixed. It is losing the rep of your business and getting no more work because someone didnt enjoy their wedding because of you. This is the biggest day of their life, it's your pride that should take a knock if they only want shit music. If you are asked to set-up before the meal and provide background music you should take a book, or even netbook to make notes on. You will need something to pass the time as getting drunk will not do you any good that early on. I drive to and from all gigs. If you do this getting drunk will not do you any good at all. Lots of people will tell you stories about crap DJs who only played what they wanted, talked loads on the mic, or did things such as karaoke which wasn't asked for. Someone's wedding is not your opportunity to show off and get a rep for your amazing mixing and great underground knowledge of music. It is someone else's big day and they want you to do what they want. You need to be able to get everyone up and happy, while balancing the requests you take with the mood of the room. If you have a crowd of over 50's they will want to dance to swing, jive, motown, 60's music and mostly music they can singalong to, get this done early then they hopefully won't complain when you play more modern music the rest of the night. Coca cola has sugar and caffeine in, it can really help you keep up for it without getting too wired. Keep things easy and wait for the food to settle in peoples bellies after a meal. They wont dance to anything until they feel comfortable. Save your big hitting “get up and dance” songs until they are worth playing. Have a set piece of songs you have practised mixing which you can rely on to fill a dancefloor. Something pop from various eras which mixed well is your own version of a “jive bunny” mini mix but which uses tunes people like. If this works you can follow it with just about any big song and they will stay dancing. My set piece is ABC (Jackson 5) I Want You Back (Jackson 5) Crazy in Love (Beyonce) Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 9 to 5 (Dolly Parton) Stayin Alive (BeeGees), Rappers Delight ( Sugarhill Gang) Kiss (Prince). This set piece also moves from 95 BPM to 112 BPM so leaving me open to go in pretty much any direction. Other set pieces in other genreas can be worth practising as it is hard to mix well and select well, consider these set pieces your trump cards that you can fall back on if you don't know what else to do. Remember: if the girls are dancing the boys will follow. If you aim your music at the males they are more likely to sit and nod appreciatingly but aim your music at the females and they will respond by dancing. Never diss someone who has made a request. My stock answer to a rubbish request is:”that's a great idea but I'm really sorry I don't have it with me tonight.” However much the party of guests are heckling a speech by the best man, brides dad or whoever – it is not right for you to join in. You are a DJ not a stand-up comedian, and not a guest. If you get notes from a couple before a wedding who say things like “you must play this or there will be riot,” “dont play cheese or there will be a riot,” or generally anything about a riot or trouble – expect them to be weak. People who cause trouble don't talk about it beforehand. They come straight up to you and cause it face to face.

adjf needs it's own dj and music production school opened in brisbane with experienced dj tutor from uk employed as main practitioner and mentor for new staff. Cupe as boss hog, Lloyd can count beans. Main income would come from private lessons but it would also earn subsidised income from government for giving lessons to kids with special needs, behavioural issues and/or rural kids who need extra motivation than school can offer. And then it's own nightclub event showcasing the best of the students as warm up djs and the best of the forum members as residents. or just send me plane tickets and visas for my family and somewhere to sleep, i'll do the rest

yeah mate, it's very easy to hear. I would expect a soundcard fault to result in drop outs or clicks and pops not this sound at all. Does this only happen when recording? It's a weird one mate.
-
^you can also copy the clip to it's own track and have the effects only on that track.

Started downloading them all to have a listen, noticed mine and Mr Chris' were set so they couldn't be downloaded. Changed mine in case anyone does want to download, chris can you do yours? I wont get a chance to listen to it from my machine. Also added a few notes to mine where songs began or ended (transitions) as best i could. Enjoyed Lloyds and Lurkers so far. Hope we have plenty of time to decide which we like best.

just an update, had itch 2.0 about two weeks now, had a few sessions at home approx 2 hours long and two wedding gigs approx 6 hours long. itch 2.0 bug free and reliable so far

not far off, in my case it's turning the bass down a little. what I mean is dont expect reference monitors to sound warm like hifi. You'll have to use your ears to find a sound that suits your music and the room you are in.
