Then what difference does the construction of the room make? In this case I go for carpet, it is much nicer under the feet.

All excellent points. I have no real intention of taking it to that next step. With my work/life situation I just don't have the ability to do it if I even wanted to. But saying that there are only 2 places here (plus some more an hour up the road) that really only play commercial/RnB type of stuff with the odd bit of Electro/dubstep chucked in there. Basically they are not serious clubs. More get pissed and start fights while music is in the background places (ok that is a nasty generalisation, but you get the idea). For me my audience is the very few people who I know, and listen to my stuff. For them it is mostly Electro, but I really prefer the more serious sides of EDM. I am hoping to educate them though. I am happy sticking to what I like doing. I was more interesting in what everyone else does.

My problem is I like so many kinds of music.... Not just EDM but I like classic rock, modern rock, metal, acoustic ballads, blues, hip hop and damn it even the occasional bit of commercial pop. I am only very new to this whole DJ thing and I have found the sub-genres of EDM I like the most have been Progressive House and Electro House. But the longer I am here the more I am liking other forms. Breaks, House, Moombahton, Hard Style, Trance, Tech House and now today after listening to some of CBG's work I am starting to like some techno too. But it's just too hard and expensive trying to cater to all these tastes and building a library of tunes. So baring a professional requirement (usually to have commercial) how many of you stray from your chosen genre? I understand any mixes do not have to be exclusive to a particular genre, and I do like to mix it up a little. For example I have found a couple Tech House tunes that slot in the middle of a progressive mix really well.

I am really liking that driving beat. Can't wait till we can get our hands on it!

Worth it. After I got it a few weeks ago I went back and had a look at the mixes I had done. The ones that sounded good followed this principle, I was just naturally doing it by ear. But now have MIK it is taking the guess work out of a lot of things.

yeah but these are sub genres of blues... House and techno was never called EDM to begin with. Maybe to you, who is not invested in those sub-genres. I am sure when Scott Joplin was writing "The Entertainer" he was making Ragtime, not the Blues and would take offence to you miss-classifying his work much as you don't like the fact that while the term "EDM" may be new, it is the term used as the genre that encompasses the sub-genres such as house, techno etc. What was this thread about again?

Dixie, Bluegrass, New Orleans and Chicago are, I am sure all forms of Blues to you. As is house, techno and dubstep all forms of EDM.

Welcome You sound a lot like me with the music interests and always wanting to get into this. I have only been here a short time and this place is already one of my favourite online hang outs.

Yeah.. Classical was overstretching. But my point was that people who dont really like the genre arent really giving it enough credit and not really listening to the whole song.

You can pretty much do anything with the mp3 ones. This is the S4 which is highly recommended. Will show you what can be done, but I am sure very few people actually can do this shit. I wouldn't even know where to begin with mine... If it doesn't start there, go to about 0:55 to start seeing it in action.

The bigger issue here is you achually have to buy it off your partner?

Ever since as far back as I can remember, about before the time alcohol got involved, I was interested in EDM. Being just about the only one of my friends, especially in the early days who liked this genre of music, I seem to always be defending it. Obviously not the same these days as it is much more mainstream. People would say how it is just crap music and repetitive. I would say they are just too used to listening to lyrics and not achually listening to the whole song. I clearly remember one of my greatest argumentative foes was an ex housemate, who liked nothing more than getting in to stoned debates (always good idea). We were in my car, pumping the freshly released Daft Punk, "Around the World," through my sik by nines. He says, "hey this is achually a good tune." To which I said, "considering it only uses 3 words...." He looked puzzled, listened and then abused me cause I had ruined the song for him. He was now focused completely on the melody, which he now realised was achual words rather than how he was listening to the whole song. He was hearing the combination of melody, beat and bass and how they worked together to make a great tune. For a while he was "getting" the groove. I also likened EDM to classical music. Symphonies etc generally have a common theme or melody that runs through various movements (typically 4, but no rules) which vary in the achual tune, tempo, key or time signature. But have a common theme throughout the lot. I have always thought EDM is similar with different remixes of the same tune. A really good example I had (back in the day) was the single for "Nightmare" by Brainbug (below). You could play this single and it had (I think) 5 remixes. A good modern example I have in my collection right now is Savoy's "We are the sun." I have the Original and Laidback Luke versions which are both Electro and two different Dubstep mixes of the same song. Anyway, this was just a thought I had from a discussion I had with a guy on Soundcloud today. Considered I had nothing better to do, so I would share this thought with you all.

I like what A-Trak's got to say. Doesn't disagree with Deadmau5 but more fills in the gaps. There is a massive difference between a DJ playing clubs, to the superstar DJ/Producer playing festivals. With the former it is not so much about the musical journey you get from the club DJ, but the spectacle and familiarity of hearing the songs YOU want and expect to hear. There are timing requirements that are not there for the club DJ and less flexibility. The exact same can be said for traditional music. The massive concerts are largely pre-set routines, played the same way each time. Yet put that same band in a small intimate venue you would hope they would approach it differently. And if they don't, there is a problem.

Let's not forget he has his own label, so makes money off others too.

Was thinking, "bugger got in on this too late." But now just realised it is for next year. Put me down for a very solid maybe to attend.
