  1. Back on topic!
  2. Ok…so the debate about beat matching v’s sync gets really heated sometimes. What I’m looking for in this thread is a good analogy to try and explain the pros and cons of both. I personally don’t care what method you use but I want to help newbs understand the difference. The best I can come up with is beat matching is like learning to drive a manual car whereas using sync is like learning to drive an automatic. The reasons being… 1) Learning to drive a manual is a harder initially, but once you have it, you have it for life. 2) Learning to drive an automatic is easier and gets you on the road faster. 3) Only having an automatic license restricts the type of car you can use. 4) With an automatic license, you don’t have to concentrate on gear changes so you can spend more time doing something else (i.e. enjoying the view). 5) Both types of license will get you from A to B, but working the gears up and down say through a mountain pass can be a real pleasure in itself. 6) Other drivers may think you’re incapable of learning complicated tasks if you only get an auto license. 7) Automatic license holders need to ask a manual driver to move their car if they park behind them in the driveway (doesnt really relate to Dj'ing but drives me CRAZY!) Anyone else got a better analogy?
  3. Yep. Check your e-mails for something from SoundCloud saying something about a copyright violation. You may even get a new e-mail for every time you try to upload it.
  4. Welcome
  5. http://m.seek.com.au/Job/22440246 Would love to do something like this right now.
  6. Go new. I've used these a heap of times as a friend of mine has a couple. Great unit and has real bang for the bucks you pay. Not made really well so you need to transport them carefully and the diodes do have a life span of a couple of years. When people say they have only a few hours run time it's probably a load of BS. My friend ended up junking one unit and combining the best working parts into his other laser.
  7. Had a look at this a while back and the consensus was it was better quality sound but not hugely better than the standard RCA connectors. RCA cables are a lot cheaper, easier to find and replace (especially in the middle of a gig). Not sure about the fader start but I thought that was triggered by the mixer and the command sent to the CDJ via a fader start cable. Best to RTFM Sol.
  8. If you want to start Dj'ing now then get the S4. But if you ever have aspirations to get into clubs then go the CDJ850s. It will take you longer initially to learn how to beat match but you'll bet set for any scenario.
  9. G'day! Us Perthites gotta organise a proper meet one day.
  10. Gaffa everything on the speaker that can be adjusted. Make some pointy hats for the subs out of black card board (gaffa them on) and no one will put drinks on them...
  11. Subs on the dance floor. Speakers where they are in the picture but lower on the speaker stands (ie head height with people on the dance floor).
  12. What's with the personal hand servant cleaning up after him? Doesn't seem right to turn your back on the crowd...mind you it looks like their a mile away.
  13. With Behringer, you get what you pay for. Their USB sound card is fine for occasional use and has saved my arse a coupla times. But if you want something for professional use then invest some decent dollars and get something with several inputs and outputs.
  14. 15s on the floor if your using them as subs and 12s at ear level to the audience (on stands or edge of stage even).
  15. If you had the stands on the hall floor, the audience would also have acted as a perfect 'bass trap' and probably reduced the effect of the reverb.
  16. Having the speaker stands on the floor of the hall would also have been better as the highs and mods are just shooting straight over the head of the audience. High frequencies are very directional and have a very defined dispersion pattern. They need to be pointed at the audience at ear level. Lows are different in that their omni directional so that you don't need to actually have them pointing at the audience. You can prove this easily by standing behind a speaker. Loads of bass but very little highs and mids.
  17. Probably due to reverb. Instead of a nice clean thump in the chest, the sound wave bounces around the room like a crazy thing and you get vibrations everywhere. Large halls are notoriously bad for this kind of thing due to all the hard surfaces. Turning up the bass normally makes things worse.
  18. It's for iPhone and iPad DJ apps. These devices don't have a separate line out for cuing a track in your headphones. This cable splits your left/right headphone signal and sends one side to your headphones and the other to an amp. Life in mono is pretty boring tho.
  19. Get some mains power timers (the ones that turn the stereo on when your on holidays). Set each device to come on and off every 15 minutes (15 minutes is usually the smallest increments on a timer). Stagger the times so at least one light is on at any given time. Better still get a mains power remote and turn them on and off at will.
  20. Shift the four head laser to the left to balance it with the fixture on the right. Move the mini laser nearer to the middle as they don't weigh very much.
  21. Yeah...they come with a number of brand names. I've used the sputniks a few times and they're a good little light. The beam isn't ultra bright but in a small to medium size venue they look pretty good.
  22. Having the cued track in one ear and the live track in the other helps with beat matching. You train your brain to listen to the beat from both tracks in different ears and you can detect if one beat Is not aligned with the beat of the other track. With both tracks in both ears its more difficult to work out which beat happens first especially if they sound similar. You start to notice it badly when your on a treadmill and the person next to you is running at a slightly different pace!
  23. Wiggle it...just a little bit...
  24. BYP will be covering it as well. It's a small world!
