Yeah the A-Trak article was good, I don't think deadmau5 is right on this one.

His sets really aren't that good anyway, he does a bit of sampling and effects but no means any better than what could be achieved on decks.

I dont understand his stance on this tbh, just because you cant do it traditionally doesnt mean everyone else is doing it half arsed deadmau5...

Even then not that much money, its all made by touring and sponsors

if you have a hit record that gets a shit load of airplay you'll get good coin from royalties.

I like what A-Trak's got to say. Doesn't disagree with Deadmau5 but more fills in the gaps.

The magic happens when the tracks are assembled in front of (and in reaction to) a given crowd. When a DJ mixes, his creative effort takes place on the spot. In contrast, for a performer like deadmau5, the creative tour de force takes place ahead of time, in the conceptual stages of his show, and he is then able to execute it like a theatre play. Good theatre is entertaining, it is moving and certainly has value. This is a classic dispute of apples and oranges, and deadmau5's only mistake in his tumblr post is trying to compare the two.
"What worries me is not that DJs are simply 'pressing play', but that they're pressing play on the same tracks in the same order night after night after night." This is very true and might be the source of deadmau5's confusion. For the DJs who bounce from venue to venue, playing the same set without the redeeming quality of a personalized stage production, there is no excuse.

There is a massive difference between a DJ playing clubs, to the superstar DJ/Producer playing festivals. With the former it is not so much about the musical journey you get from the club DJ, but the spectacle and familiarity of hearing the songs YOU want and expect to hear. There are timing requirements that are not there for the club DJ and less flexibility.

The exact same can be said for traditional music. The massive concerts are largely pre-set routines, played the same way each time. Yet put that same band in a small intimate venue you would hope they would approach it differently. And if they don't, there is a problem.

I disagree.

I think when things are less planned they go better. But then that means lighting guys and Vjs (Whom I believe should be SHARING the stage with the Dj or Producer at a festival or club) have to be equally as talented at their craft as the Dj/ Producer is at his/ hers.

Everything is so, pre-set now. Everyone knows what to expect. Laser shows, pyro shows, big LED screens, all that shit, none of it excites me anymore because thats ALL it is. EVERY big act has that now and they try to mimick it in clubs.

I think too many 'Nights' are trying to copy these 'Events' and losing what it means to have a party. A party is a lot more than 7 Djs and a Vj.

Any one can do that. 2 Dj's doubling as lighting guys and Vj's. .... That's going to make for a great party. Especially if they have the right synergy between them to know how eachother works and play to those pros and cons.

I think events are suffering the same. Everyone is trying to put on a SHOW and everyone seems to have forgotten about parties.

I respect deadmau5 as a producer. He knows music, i think the melodies in some of his tracks are brilliant and he has a very unique sound.

In terms of the DJing argument, as someone else mentioned, he puts on a "show". Having seen him live a couple of times, It is obviously all pre-set, but the light shows and visual effects are stunning when it all flows together. I saw him at warehouse last year and it was easily one of the best "shows" i've seen at a festival. The venue helped, but everything came together really well.

On the other hand, live mixing, reading a crowd, chopping and sampling tracks in a club is a totally different experience and commands just as much respect.

As A-trak said, it's comparing apples and oranges and both techniques have pro's and con's.
