I have a launchpad and it's a very useful bit of kit. Especially good for travelling. I bring mine to site with me. That being said you can get more out of a midi keyboard with pads, faders and knobs to play with.
Not all MIDI devices are keyboard based. you can get desktop synthesiser's that have no keys. You can program them to play using MIDI messages sent from your DAW (ableton, logic etc). Also, early house music would have been made without using MIDI so you don't need it but it certainly comes in handy.
so you kind of are genre specific as that rules out dubstep, drumstep dnb, hard dance, hardstyles If i make my dubstep at 70bpm does that make me ellegible plenty of genres that fall under the 130 mark so they aren't too specific.
I don't have massive so can't help with that. When I stick a bassline in ableton I almost always use the corpus effect on it. Usually the sub club one. Makes some difference. Try various settings on some of those til you find one that works. Use a bit of side chain against your kick.
What kind of tracks are you trying to make? You'll obviously listen to a lot of music similar to what you are trying to make so see what they do and try to emulate it.
Who's the guy in Perth you buy records from DefKon? I'm yet to purchase any records from overseas but i will be once i have a house. Most likely from Germany. i wouldn't expect them to arrive in a hurry anyway. And I will be ordering from Discogs too so most likely other European countries. Probably the biggest thing I'll miss about living in the UK. Records are easy to get.
What do you do exactly that is dangerous to headphones that you had to think about being careful? When I have mine they are pretty much on my head or round my neck most of the time. Can't say I've ever thought about being careful with them.
