  1. No intro thread, no support or interest from me. Dats my rules...
  2. Brisbane does have a pretty awesome nightlife and seems to be pretty cool these days. It's certainly different to it's bigger cousins Sydney and Melbourne (although similar to Melbourne in many regards). edit: If you are in Brisbane Friday head out to Eaton's Hill Hotel and check out Bombs Away. Cheesy and corny but they put on a pretty good show.
  3. BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL OPPOSES LOCKOUT LAWS: “WE’RE NOT SPENDING $4M TO SEND PEOPLE TO BED EARLY” After a fiery debate about alcohol-fuelled violence in entertainment strips, Brisbane City Council sent a clear message to the Queensland State Government, by vehemently opposing any moves to restrict trading hours of licensed venues. The Opposition demanded a 1am lockout and the restriction of alcohol service in venues at 3am. Councillor Vicki Howard, who looks after the Fortitude Valley precinct, said cutting back hours would affect the livelihood of venue operators and undermine the city’s current construction plans, stating: “We’re not spending $4 million to revitalise Brunswick Street mall to send people to bed early.” Kirsty Brown, who heads up Keep Sydney Open, is pleased that other governments aren’t as willing to implement such extreme measures. “As the lockouts loom over Sydney, ready to be go into effect right before Mardi Gras, it’s dismaying – but also encouraging to see other governments across the country speak out against this model. The evidence, from several failed attempts at lockouts in places like Melbourne and the Gold Coast, is overwhelmingly that the lockouts will not set out to achieve what the Premier hopes for. Alcohol-related violence has been steadily declining, without lockouts, for several years now. “What we do know, is that live music and cultural spaces that run late into the night are going to see instant and serious reductions to their income, which will have a flow on affect to the number of people they employ and the amount of live performance opportunities for local musicians they can create. These spaces are not subsidised by poker machines or sports-betting, or high-volume capacities with multiple bars, their profit margins are smaller and more precarious- they are providing entertainment as their priority, but also rely on late trading and alcohol sales to make the profits which make their cultural activities sustainable. And let’s not forget that Sydney is now one of the most expenses cities in the world to rent property and employ people in, so when we talk about reductions to profits, we are really talking about a venue’s ability to actually remain open and keep trading. “It’s pleasing to see Brisbane pushing back against what is becoming a popular band-aid solution for fixing alcohol-related violence. Let’s step back, look at the consequences, look at Sydney’s international reputation, look at our goals for having a successful and safe night-time economy, look at what we’re doing to opportunities for musicians and performers - and work towards a real solution.” http://www.themusicnetwork.com/brisbane-city-council-opposes-lockout-laws/
  4. Not a huge representation here from Brisbane (that contribute much) other than Tomy who can't help with the mobile thing. Most of the info you are chasing will be the same regardless of which city so hopefully some of the more experienced mobile DJ's can help there.
  5. A mate has/had a spare for sale.
  6. Yeah forgot to add the other side.
  7. Are you talking about just for your own house parties? If so what you have is sufficient. Ultimately nobody cares what you use (except gear snobs) as long as the tunes are good and you create a good vibe.
  8. Cool let me know how it goes down?
  9. I got the Traktor DJ app that allows you to connect an S2/4 to the iPad. Haven't actually tested it yet. But apparently has most of the functionality of the PC program.
  10. At my work we talk about doing your 50% with regards to working safely. In this case you have done your 50%. Not much more you can do. If there is no DJ there and their day is ruined, that's by no fault of your own.
  11. You know what would be awesome, is of we knew a travel agent who knows this shit.
  12. Why do you want a laptop for the job? Can't use your existing PC?
  13. More about genre changes and aliases than specific genre.
  14. And most important of all (how could they miss this?) Streetcleaner is now Empia
  15. I like this. Not the style of music I would listen to, but I can really appreciate what it is (too dark for my tastes, I like happy tunes). But for these kinds of melodic kind of mixes I really like when the songs mix together almost seamlessly. Mixing in key helps a lot here, and just by ear it sounds like you are? From what I have heard so far (only about half way through) I would have liked the transitions between song 1 & 2 and 2 & 3 to be a bit less abrupt. Between 3 & 4 is perfect (as an example of what I am talking about). Of course this is all very nit-picky. As there is absolutely nothing wrong with what is here. Song selection seems to be good and well mixed. I've got to head out (and can't listen to the rest) but what I might have tried is: 1. Blend the 2nd song into the 1st so the bass line that starts at 8:23 kicks in the beat after the first song's beat drops at about 7:22 (good use of EQ's here to make this work). Also keeps the beat going, without letting the energy drop. 2. After the 2nd songs drop and the bass come back in at 12:30 I might try coming in with the 3rd songs bass line here (ie kill bass on first song, start 3rd like at 14:03). Because this is a natural point in the tune for the bass to kick back in it will sound fairly natural, even though the bass/beat is from a different tune. Provided keys match/compatible it should sound ok. Then either let the 2nd song play out or use EQ to fade it out. These points may or may not work (can't tell until I try, just going from ear here). Just what I would do. This is also my style not yours, so take that as you will. No two DJ's will mix the same, and that is a great thing IMO.
  16. Libraries\Music On a serious note for me the vast majority comes from Beatport. But like Mitch, Soundcloud profiles and blogs are a great source. Often artists are sending out some free tunes to get a feel for them, or after festival season is done they may put up their remix they've been playing (once it is played out of course) up for download. One of my favourites is Thissongissick.com which has mostly banger type of tunes. They are also a good way of getting a feeling of which way the industry is going. For example Thissongissick is a good barometer of the US market. I am noticing a move to Deep House, Nu Disco, House (along with all the old fave Electro/Progressive/Trap). Free tunes on TSIS on the first page alone.... https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/big-sean-feat-ellie-goulding https://soundcloud.com/itskaasi/caroline-street https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/party-supplies-going-back-to https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/felon-isla-sebastian-carter https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/sub-focus-turn-back-time-gold https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/que-o-g-bobby-johnson-lareda Not a tune but a 2 hour mix https://soundcloud.com/djsnake-king/dj-snake-essential-mix-bbc There are heaps of free, legal tunes out there if you look. On a side note, by having these tunes on their blog I have now put down a pre-order for Major Lazer's new EP (a style of music I would not normal listen to, but liked this) due to hearing this tune on TSIS.... https://soundcloud.com/majorlazer/major-lazer-aerosol-can-feat
  17. Bit sad.... Had a mate who is a hardcore BDO and festival goer say this years was one of the best he has been to. And he has been every year for the last 10 to 15 years.
  18. Hey
  19. I like how a number of years ago Brisbane declared the Valley as an entertainment precinct. It was becoming more up market and people were moving back into it with new developments being built. Then started to complain about noise from venues. The council (and I think the State got involved too) and declared it an official Entertainment precinct with higher tolerances to noise levels and basic told everyone to get fucked and their complaints were null and void. I think all new developments have to have higher levels of noise reducing material now too? Back in my younger days Gladstone brought in a 1am lockout. It resulted in a heap of angry drunk people on the street between 1am and about 3am. It didn't work. Instead of people naturally filtering out and going home from 1am onwards, it put a huge number on the street at the same time. Transport couldn't cope. More problems ensued. Needless to say they got rid of it.
  20. I watched this last night on the tellie and was wondering just what they were doing? There were real musicians on the stage actually playing songs. The only thing I can see them doing is dropping samples of their other songs in there.
  21. Cheers. Nice to know the tunes I selected worked. Pretty much what I was aiming for. Was thinking of a late afternoon beer garden or poolside setting as I was making it. And hopefully those couple cock ups didn't ruin it.
  22. I think you're in the right path. Also worth looking into the Native Instruments line of controllers (S2 or S4). I've not heard the AD700's but I know they are very highly regarded for their audio qualities. I have Alessandro MS-1's but for mixing I prefer the bassier sound of my Sennheiser HD25's.
  23. I'll listen to it some time after you post an intro thread.
  24. Thanks... Silence? Yeah I've given up not doing it. May not be needed but saves having to go back and adding some silence in later if I do.
  25. Something completely new for me. Usually mixing Electro and Progressive House shit. But I have been digging this down tempo funkier kind of tunes recently. I have collecting songs for a while now and thinking I need to get my ass in gear and make a mix. I am not usually a live mixer. I usually prepare everything, but I got sick of fucking round and thought I would just wing it. No cue points even set. Yes there are some cringe worthy moments in there... Real ugly between 3rd and 4th song (i think) and then I accidently bump the pitch fader later on... Oh well. Still nice to move out of my comfort zone and try a new genre. Let me know what you think? https://soundcloud.com/dj-drc1/summer-funky-mix
