I work at a place that does warranty repairs for apple, dell, lenovo. If there is reasonable doubt that the damage is customer induced we aren't supposed to replace/fix it. If it was a fault with the lcd and it wasn't displaying properly yes, it would generally be warranty. If we can see cracks in the lcd and marks on the case its generally a case of "you have dropped this laptop and caused the damage" and therefore not covered by warranty. Also if you go the way of getting it repaired, you play the chance that you pay the money for the lcd screen, but then it could also be the lvds cable, and then again could also be motherboard damage, so the cost of repair can quickly get out of control It is a reasonable question you asked, with other parts of the laptop it can be strange what is/isn't covered
