Had a pretty decent gig up at Sting Bar in Cronulla last night. We left Wagga yesterday at like 1pm, got up to my mates place in Cronulla at like 6pm, had a couple of beers and watched the footy etc"

Got to sting at about 9:30, chilled out till our set which was 11:30-close (1am)

Got up and started doing our thing, opened up with a few house/electro commercial tracks and remixes and a few of our own bootlegs. Club owner came up and told us to play more commercial stuff lol even though we already were playing old school and commercial tunes. So we just played less hectic stuff for the rest of the night, a little bit more progressive and big house stuff with the occasional dirty track thrown in.

Our mixing was pretty solid, had people on the DF for our whole set, was a pretty tame night considering our track restrictions but its a foot in the door for the Sydney scene at least.

Did a friends nieces 16th on Sat. It was okay, mostly girls, no alcohol, so the whole night was basically, one direction/bieber (thank fuck for the jump smokers remixes), gangam style on repeat and the obligatory 80's sing alongs.

I've started to care less about getting the bpms exactly and just nudge the jog wheel to get it back in time. On tracks with vocal lead ins (aka, vocal starts on 3,4,etc) I've started to put less of a focus on counting the beats in the vocal and figuring out when I need to drop it, Instead I kinda just sing to myself and play where it feels right.

Did a mate from works 30th last night with my gear, started out alright... good crowd & eased in the tunes nicely. This was a freebee as he is a fairly good mate. He also has a couple of other mates that can DJ so I was happy to let them have a spin so I could socialise and get amongst it.

Anyway he is a mad Hawks supporter, there were a couple of players there as well. So a couple of his good mates gave me a CD with the Swans club song so I cued them at key points during the speeches which was great and made everyone have a good laugh.

After that things went a little south, a little kid was playing near my monitors and knocked one of them off the stand, luckily for him it didn't hit him, but unluckily for me is put a lovely big scratch and dint in it. Still works so it could have been worse.

Then when the other guy jumped on he immediately started playing all the commercial stuff, naturally the girls loved it. So I let him get into it, the, when I jump on and start playing some tunes I was getting requests left right and center. It was giving me the sh*ts so I just handed over the decks to the other guy and got utterly trashed instead.

Another thing that I was surprised with is that most of his mixing was really bad, not getting up on him though as he is fairly new to DJing, but just goes to show that sometimes the crowd doesn't care how badly you mix the tracks as if they are digging the tunes. :|

What Club was pumping last night.

A bit sweet and sour though as i couldnt hear anything out of my right ear for my set, has been blocked all week the piece of shit and once i had some volume in my headphones and the booth that was it shut up shop couldnt hear anything.

Was a struggle but got through my set with solid mixing, not quite up to my usual standard but not being able to hear your booth at all fucked me.

That said was a good experience to mix in headphones and the crowd absolutely loved the set, the place was rammed when i finished at 11.30.

Got three requests for bloody gangnam style haha.

^fuckin gangnam style.

I did a great wedding last night, golden era hiphop all over the playlists and all the guests were really up for it. Most requests from guests on the night were already on the playlist, a sure sign that the crew were tight, and they reacted really well.

...except the 12yr old who emotionally blackmailed the bride to insist on that gangnam song (even though she knew it wasn't cool)... so I had to drop it... then the brat did the dance while everyone else went to the bar.

Interlude over: mixed in azealia banks 212. Dancefloor instantly packed again but funnily enough the 12yr olds mum took him away :teef:

then back to the hiphop.

aye 212 is pretty played out over here now and is ready for playing at weddings.

Was in every bar/club etc all year coz it was so good at bridging the gap between dance and hiphop.

But yer, i sold my soul and got over it so now play shit (gangnam) if I have to when mobile. It's only a drop in the ocean compared to the quality I get to play at proper gigs. In my mind mobile and club gig are such different jobs it's no different to a chef cooking burgers all day then treating his mates to a proper banquet in the eve.

that said last night was a cool mobile gig, and it's real nice when I can go mobile but feel like it was (mostly) a mates gig.

Saturday night: Didn't make it past the semi finals. Got a message from the promoter the next day saying it was really close and that I did a good job and they'll keep me in mind when they have some openings. Also they loved my poster, I was the first to bother making one, so I guess it helps to stand out.

Sunday night: Coco Jambo round 2. New venue, Upstairs at the Bay Hotel Mornington. Reasonably sized, big enough that you can have people dancing and not hitting each other, but not too big that it seems empty. Nice wooden floor. Brought the s4 and my own lights, but had to use their sound system; Four 10" speakers hung directly above the dance floor facing down, they were also compressed fairly aggressively. The band down stairs was fairly low and you could feel their bass in the floor. I talked to the owner and he's letting me bring my subwoofer next time. We had 23 people show up, for our first night at this new place I'm very happy, 3 of them saw our facebook adds and decided to come down and learn how to dance. 2 were experienced salsa dancers who heard the music when they walked past the stairs and decided to join. We covered out costs, made $11 profit (which is about $1489 increase in income compared to the last one...). Most of our patrons were from the dance studio I teach at, the general feedback was they liked the relaxed environment, being able to grab some champagne and tapas and dance when they feel, instead of being forced all the time.

The night ran for 3 and a half hours. It was interesting, we planned to salsa and cha cha at the start for one hour, but that backfired as everybody ordered food which arrived halfway through the class. So we took a break, everybody ate, then we got back into it. Made them swap partners a bit, to get them to know each other then I told them to go back to their original partner and put on some music.

They danced for about 15 minutes then got over salsa. From this point onward we more or less followed this pattern. Teach a new dance for 15 (salsa, cha cha, bachata, merengue), then we all danced together while I counted it out, swapped partners, then I'd let them do their own thing while I mixed for about 15 minutes. Then I would go back to just playing chill music. As the night when on I would play less chill music and more dancing music as people started to get more comfortable.

An interesting trend that seems to be developing, both here and at Alumbra, we always get the band from next door coming over to check it out in the breaks. Guess we're doing something right. Photos should be up around tuesday

quality story overit! Sounds like youve played some quality places

agreed

Thanks lads. It's certainly been a sweet life so far :)

BTW Lurk6r: I never knew you did latin classes too, I've done a lot of gigs which follow on from such nights and most of the dancers and teachers from the latin lessons stay on after for more... great crowd to play with and it sounds like you are building a good thing the way you are approaching this coco jambo of yours +rep.

Seems like you have a very tough and small niche crowd you are drawing from with your events man.

Do you have a desire to do the latin/dancing centered events or maybe a more broad party style could help your numbers?
